In Boulder County, two training sessions per year are offered. Evening classes in the fall are ideal for gardeners who would like training divided over two days per week. They are offered mid-September through mid-December, with breaks during holidays.
In the spring, classes are held one full day per week and run from early January through the end of March. Snow days may extend the training by another week.
Interested applicants are asked to return an application, attend a short interview with current Master Gardener volunteers, and take a quiz on provided reading material.
What is required in a Master Gardener applicant?
A desire to help others learn about gardening is the number one requirement! If you enjoy helping others to "catch the gardening bug", this is an ideal program for you. Many of our volunteers want to share their knowledge by working with youth, tending demonstration gardens for the public to view, or to offer advice at public "plant clinics".
Do you need to be a "garden expert"? No! You don't have to be a gardening expert, but because this is not a beginner gardening class applicants should have some gardening background including one season of Colorado area growing.
You do need to be able to attend most, if not all of the apprentice classes. We require that all participants attend 9 of the 11 classes. Make-up attendance of classes can be arranged with prior notice at one of the surrounding area counties during the spring day sessions, and make-up of evening classes can be arranged by attending the following spring class.
